SOLITAIRE | CONCERT FOR VIOLIN & PIANO

Join us for SOLITAIRE, a concert by the Austrian violinist Johannes Fleischmann and the German pianist Christoph Ulrich Meier. Solitaire as a term is ambiguous: it denotes a single-set gemstone or a single piece in general. In French it means lonely or alone. This program consists of little-known works for violin and piano, all of them musical gems by famous composers like Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt or Johannes Brahms, who influenced each other either as friends, patrons or even antipodes, many of them inspired by famous violinists of their time.

The event is followed by an Austrian wine reception.

PROGRAM

Konstantia Gourzi - Aria for Violin and Piano Op. 95, UA

Joseph Haydn - Jacob’s Dream

Richard Wagner/Leopold Auer - Träume

Franz Liszt - Die drei Zigeuner (Paraphrase)

Carl Reinecke - Romance in E minor Op.3 Nr.1

Robert Schumann/Leopold Auer - Vogel als Prophet

Joseph Joachim - Romance in C major

Johannes Brahms - Scherzo in C minor WoO 2

Alexander Zemlinsky - Serenade in A major

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Johannes Fleischmann is a young and aspiring artist from the city of Vienna, and as a “Viennese Violinist” he has developed a remarkable repertoire. He graduated from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with distinction in 2011 and received scholarships from the Angelika-Prokopp-Foundation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Foundation. His versatility and passion for chamber music are evident in multiple collaborations with celebrated musicians like Julius Berger, José Gallardo and many more. He has performed in famous concert halls like the Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus and Carnegie Hall in New York, and has been appointed by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as ambassador for NASOM, the New Austrian Sound of Music project.

Johannes Fleischmann is the founder and artistic director of the master classes and music festival Althofener Meisterklassen in Carinthia, Austria, and also teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He performs on a violin by Stephan von Baehr, Paris anno 2016.

Christoph Ulrich Meier is the Musical Supervisor of the Bayreuth Festival in Bavaria and has been involved with the festival since 1992. He studied song accompaniment with Norman Shetler and conducting at the Musikhochschule Würzburg. In 1993 he became Daniel Barenboim’s assistant at the Berlin State Opera. He has worked with Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez, and since 2000 he has worked closely with Christian Thielemann. His work has taken him around the world from the Deutsche Oper Berlin to the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, where he recorded two albums.

Since 2019 he has been performing as a duo with Johannes Fleischmann. For over a decade he has held a professorship for musical interpretation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he is musical director of musical dramatic performance. Christoph Ulrich Meier has devoted himself to discovering unknown masters of Viennese Classicism with the Ensemble Wiener Cammerstyl, which he founded in 2020.
